What if I think my computer has a virus and what to do
Recognizing the Signs of a Virus Infection
Here are some common signs of a virus infection on your computer:
- Slow performance
- Unexpected pop-up windows
- Unexplained changes to your files or settings
- Missing files
- Unusual error messages
Protecting Your Computer from Viruses
The District has several protections in place already on its equipment which significantly reduces risk associated with viruses and malware. That said, even with protections in place, risk cannot be completely mitigated. Below are some additional things to remember to help further protect your computer and data as well as report if your computer is potentially infected.
Remember...
- The District will never ask you for any Personally identifiable information via email.
- Be cautious when opening email attachments or clicking on links.
- Avoid downloading software from untrustworthy sources.
- The District will keep your software updated at the organizational level. It should not require any overt action from you. If the pop up requires you to click, confirm its safe before doing so.
- Don't change your firewall settings or other settings on your device without checking with IT first.
- If you suspect your computer is infected, report it to IT immediately via phone or in person to a District Technician. Some viruses or malware can impact your emails both sending and receiving, making submitting a ticket online difficult or impossible.
- Be cautious of moving files from unknown computers via USB drive/external drive to your district machine. Infected documents can be quick transmitters of viruses and malware.
- Don't use your District issued equipment for personal reasons. This increases the risk to your data both District and personal.
By following these tips, you can reduce the risk of a virus infecting your computer and causing damage.
